Sustainability Tip of the Day: Get Clean Without the Waste

In honor of the University of Michigan-Dearborn's Sustainability Week, we're bringing you one tip per day on what you can do to help.

The is hosting their annual Sustainability Week Oct. 17-20. This year's focus is water.

Here's one idea for what you can do to help:

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average household spends $500 per year on water and sewer bills. Beyond new fixtures and appliances, people can take easy, everyday steps to conserve water.

One way is to take showers instead of baths. A full bathtub uses up to 70 gallons of water, while a five-minute shower uses only 10 to 25 gallons. Another way to save water is to turn off the faucet while brushing one's teeth. That can save up to eight gallons of water per day.

Also, the EPA recommends waiting to do dishes or laundry until there is a full load of dishes or clothes to be cleaned.
