Sustainability Tip of the Day: Garden With Care

In honor of the University of Michigan-Dearborn's Sustainability Week, we're bringing you one tip per day on what you can do to help.

The is hosting their annual Sustainability Week Oct. 17-20. This year's focus is water.

Here's one idea for what you can do to help:

The Environmental Protection Agency offers simple advice for keeping your home's lawn and garden beautiful while avoiding wasteful water use.

  • Water your lawn or garden during the cool morning hours, as opposed to midday, to reduce evaporation.
  • Set sprinklers to water lawns and gardens only. Check that you’re not watering the street or sidewalk.
  • Try not to overwater your landscaping. Learn plants’ water needs and water different types appropriately.
  • Don’t overfertilize your lawn. You will increase the need for water.
  • Research which species of plants are native to your region. They will require less water to thrive.
