Sacred Heart Picnic Brings Out the Faithful

Sacred Heart Catholic Church's annual picnic marks the end of summer for parishioners, community.

It’s an event that occurs on the last Sunday before Labor Day every year and this year, picnic-goers couldn’t have asked for a more seasonable day.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church’s annual picnic went off without a hitch after Sunday morning mass. For its attendees, the event was a chance to catch up with other congregants and have a little fun.

“We have this event every year,” said Sacred Heart Pastor Peter Petroske. “It’s something we look forward to each year.”

Fran Helner, the pastoral associate of the church, said the event is a great way to mark the end of the summer and that during mass, teachers and students are blessed.

“A new school year is beginning, and it’s a good time for an event like this, even though it’s not only about the school,” she said. “Members of the community are welcome and everything is free–the church provides everything, and it’s not a fundraiser.”

During the event, live music was provided by Little Davy and the Diplomats, a rock and blues ensemble made up of some musicians who worship at the church.

Additionally, a huge selection of food, treats, popcorn and beer was on site. Children’s activities included an inflatable bouncer and sketch artist. After lunch, adults were able to partake in bingo at the church hall.

Helner said the event has been a great harbinger of goodwill for attendees.

“We used to have it at the in Dearborn, but since we opened the hall (in 2003), we’ve had it on the grounds of the church and people like that better.”
