Patch Adams to Visit Oakwood Patients, Speak at UM-Dearborn

The noted funny man and celebrated doctor will give two public lectures on campus, as well as visit with patients at Oakwood.

Patch Adams is coming to Dearborn.

This Thursday and Friday, the clown, doctor and social activist will give two lectures at the , as well as visit patients at the , and the Adult and Child Day Care, both located in Dearborn.

The university sought to bring Adams to Dearborn as part of its Martin Luther King, Jr. week of events.

Perhaps best known as the focus of the 1998 film of the same name starring Robin Williams, Hunter "Patch" Adams has devoted 40 years to changing America's health care system.

His nonprofit Gesundheit! Institute is centered around the ideals of free health care, treating patients as friends, and incorporating laughter and alternative medicine into treatment.

On Thursday, Adams–with the help of UM-Dearborn students–will bring his unique brand of health care to patients at the Adult and Child Day Care at 10:45 a.m. and the Oakwood Hospital at 11:30 a.m.

That evening, Adams will give a public lecture titled “Medicine for Fun, not Funds” on the UM-Dearborn campus at 6:30 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held on campus in Kochoff Hall, located in the University Center.

On Friday, Adams will have a special event for UM-Dearborn students at 10:30 a.m. where he will share his story: “Living a Life of Joy.”
