Hundreds Turn Out for 2013 Dearborn Relay for Life

The field behind the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center was filled with teams and spectators helping out the American Cancer Society.

Hundreds of residents gathered for the American Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life of Dearborn fundraising event under beautiful blue skies at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center on April 27.

The event was held at the center's soccer field, which was dotted with Relay team tents and fundraising activities.

Event Chairwoman Alysia Schuler said that in addition to raising money, the event serves to celebrate those who've fought cancer and honor those who have lost their battles. The Relay itself, a continuous overnight walk around the track meant to symbolize the hardship of fighting cancer, starts each year with a survivor's lap to honor those who have beaten the disease.

"Relay is an amazing night when we all work together to fight back against cancer," she said.

Because event organizers do not require the public to sign in to attend, there's no way to know how many spectators visited the Relay, Schuler said.
