Disability Commission Talks Awareness Day, Leadership Decisions
The Dearborn Commission on Disability Concerns met Tuesday evening at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center.
A swirl of topics–from how to handle cooking demonstrations to deciding to wait to name its leadership–were discussed at the Tuesday night meeting of the Dearborn Commission on Disability Concerns, held at the .
The commissioners, having previously made the decision to hold its Dearborn Disability Awareness Day in conjunction with the Senior Health Information Expo, agreed it will move ahead with plans to engage the Culinary Program to demonstrate adaptive cooking methods, and how to use adaptive tools in the kitchen.
After a brief discussion on what recipes should be used, and how many tables should be retained, the commission determined it would be beneficial to people with no or low vision to learn such skills.

The expo, which is presented by Dearborn Senior Services, will take place from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center. There, commissioners will demonstrate cooking methods, as well as pass out literature to people with disabilities and other interested parties.

Another topic of discussion was how to get more people with disabilities into Community Emergency Response Team Training. Commissioner Margaret Currie said getting more people with disabilities into training would be helpful if an emergency were to occur.
“(People) are taught how to respond in emergencies, but if you can’t do it the way the instructor shows you, then they can show you how to respond,” she said.

Leadership Decision Delayed
The commission also decided that it will delay electing its new officers because only six of nine commissioners were at the Tuesday meeting.
“Even though we have a quorum, I think we should wait until more us os are here,” said Commissioner Cathy McAdam. “When Commissioner (Leah) Shannon said she needed a break, I believed her. I hope that some of you seriously consider these positions.”
The current chairperson is Shannon, who previously indicated she will not seek reelection. The current vice chair is Nancy Bower.
