Dearborn Allied War Veterans Council Seeks City’s Oldest Living Veteran

The veteran will be honored as part of the city's Memorial Day ceremony on May 27.

The Dearborn Allied War Veterans Council (DAWVC) is searching for the city’s oldest living veteran to honor on Memorial Day.

The DAWVC joins with the city of Dearborn each year to present the Memorial Day parade and remembrance service.

This year, the DAWVC would like pay special tribute to the city’s oldest veteran as part of the annual service. It is asking for the public’s help to find eligible honorees who live in Dearborn. Submissions, including the name and age of the veteran, can be submitted by calling the Department of Public Information at 313-943-2285.

The deadline is May 3.

This year’s parade and service will focus on POWs/MIAs and their families. Veterans do not need to be in those categories to be eligible for the oldest veteran honor, however.

The parade grand marshals are U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the U.S. Armed Services Committee; and former Ambassador Charles A. Ray, who served as the deputy assistant secretary of defense for POW/Missing Personnel Affairs and director at the Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office from 2006-2009.

The Memorial Day parade takes place at 10 a.m. on May 27, along Michigan Avenue in Dearborn from Greenfield to Schaefer.

The service will follow at noon at the Dearborn War Memorial, located in front of City Hall, 13615 Michigan Ave.

All veterans, active duty military, and members of the military reserve and National Guard are encouraged to walk in the Dearborn Memorial Day Parade.

Veterans do not need to belong to a veteran’s organization, but must register to participate. Individuals and community groups are also encouraged to register to be part of the parade.

Registrations are due by April 26 and can be submitted at www.cityofdearborn.org.
