Yoga Wellness Collective Opens in Dearborn

Area teachers specialize in programs for children, adults, professionals and military veterans.

A new yoga and massage studio opened its doors in west Dearborn on Thursday.

The studio is located at 21925 Garrison St. and is operated by local residents Carrie Hura and Erin Moss.

"Our goal is to bring together professionals in the field of health and wellness to offer those services to the community," Moss said. "Right now we offer yoga, with seven different teachers, as well as massage and wellness workshops."

Moss, who has been teaching yoga since graduating from Yoga for Peace in 2012, said she "loves helping people feel good."

"Even modern medical research recommends correct and regular practice of yoga to help prevent as well as treat many types of ailments," she said.

The Yoga and Wellness Collective offers classes every day of the week except for Fridays. Classes include Yoga for Musicians, Gentle Yoga, Sundown Yoga and Meditation, Trauma Sensitive Restorative Yoga, Mommy and Me Yoga (ages 2 and up), and Warrior Yoga for veterans, among other offerings. The classes are typically 60 to 90 minutes and cost $10.

One of her favorite classes, Moss said, is Yoga for Musicians. Recently she had an entire Detroit rock band come into the studio to sample the class.

"We worked on breathing exercises, hamstrings and muscle flexibility so that they could move better on stage," she said. "Just after a few classes I've noticed a considerable difference. It's a lot of fun, and it's a great class for people who work with computers all day, too."

As the business expands, Hura said she hopes to fill a niche based on what the community needs.

"Our goal is to teach that, as individuals, and collectively as a community, everyone can live a life with less suffering and sorrow and more joy and purpose," Hura said.

Hura, who has been teaching yoga for more than 15 years, is also a nationally-certified massage therapist specializing in aromatherapy, prenatal massage, and craniosacral therapy.

She studied at Irene's Myomassology Institute in Southfield and completed her 500-hour certification with a specialty in Yoga Therapy at Ananda Seva Mission in Santa Rosa, Calif. in 2007. Her latest trainings include Trauma Sensitive Yoga for people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, and street yoga. She is an experienced yoga teacher through the Yoga Alliance.

In addition to meditation workshops, Hura offers massages for $65 per hour, or $95 for 90 minutes. Options include Swedish massage with aromatherapy, Chakra massage, Serenity Shiatsu, and sinus treatment with cold marble stones. She also offers a 60-minute massage with a physical assessment and yoga therapy for $120.

"We're hoping to expand the services we offer in the future to things like acupuncture, reflexology, naturopathy, etc.," Moss said.

The studio will hold an open house and ribbon cutting in September, with tours of the building, free mini yoga sessions and free massage. No date has been announced.
