Severstal Employees Donate 7,000 Pounds of Food to Dearborn Animal Shelter

Company employees held a food challenge to collect pet food during April and May for the animal shelter.

Dozens of dogs and cats housed at the Dearborn Animal Shelter won't be going hungry, thanks to a recent donation from Severstal North America.

Severstal employees donated more than 7,000 pounds of food to the shelter this week as part of the shelter's Operation Feed Fido program.

Shana Kellogg, an employee in Severstal's corporate legal department, and Judy Herod, were the driving force behind the fundraiser in Dearborn, urging Severstal employees to get involved. To make things more enticing, they held a friendly competition between departments in the plant to see who could collect the most pet food.

“I am so thrilled that we exceeded our goal and expectations," Herod said.

The pet food donation comes on top of the company's recent donation of $2,200 raised for the shelter's annual Mutt Strut event.

Elaine Greene, executive director of the Friends for the Dearborn Animal Shelter, applauded the efforts of Severstal employees stating, “We are so grateful to our friends at Severstal and the many donors and volunteers who helped make this donation to our Operation Feed Fido program possible. It is our pet food bank for those in need. Many families in the community will benefit from this generous donation, which helps to keep families together while they get back on their feet.”

Ron Kostyo, vice president and general manager for Severstal Dearborn, presented the company's Good Neighbor Award to the ironmaking department for bringing in the most pet food during the competition.

“In its second year, the Dearborn Animal Shelter Food Drive was a great success. Over 7,000 pounds of food was donated, nearly five times what was contributed last year," he said. "I am always thankful for and proud of the compassion and thoughtfulness of our Dearborn workforce. Looking out for our neighbors, even the furry kind, is an important part of life."
