Hackers Hit Fifth Third Bank Website

The bank, which has two Dearborn branches, tells customers their accounts are secure.

WXYZ reports that Fifth Third Bank's website was hacked on Tuesday.

Fifth Third has two branch locations in Dearborn—one on Telegraph Road and one on Schaefer Road.

According to the report, hackers did not gain access to customer data. The attack denied service to customers, by flooding the site with traffic.

On Tuesday, the bank posted the following message on its Facebook page:

"We're actively monitoring and assessing delays on 53.com. This slowdown has not impacted customer accounts. We are working to restore online connectivity as soon as possible and will provide updates when available."

As I posted on the WXYZ article: "Using a phrase like "hacked" is entirely inaccurate for the situation with Fifth Third and the other banks that have had a DDoS against them over the past months. If the staff writer composing this post is unaware, you should be reaching out to information security professionals before confusing the general public and potentially creating undue concern for patrons of Fifth Third with the reckless language found in this."
