Ford Reveals New, Lighter-Weight F-150 at Detroit Auto Show Monday

The new F-150 has a lighter-weight aluminum alloy body and steel frame that takes about 700 pounds off the truck's weight.

Ford Motor Company revealed its new line of 2015 F-Series pickups Monday morning at the media preview of the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The company made a potentially industry-changing move with the new F-150, which has a lighter-weight aluminum alloy body and steel frame that takes about 700 pounds off the truck's weight, the company reported.

The new F-150's light weight also enables the use of a new 2.7-liter turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine —one of four engine choices Ford is offering with the truck. The other engine choices are a 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost, a regular 3.5-liter V6 and a 5-liter V8.

Research shows that 80 percent of truck buyers want better fuel economy, and they appreciate the properties of aluminum, Ford reported.

“We’ve done a lot of research,” Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of the Americas, told the Detroit Free Press. “It’s the right way to go.”

The 2015 trucks will also have 11 new class-exclusive features, including a 360-degree camera view, integrated loading ramps stowed in the pickup bed, 400-watt power outlets inside the cab, LED headlights, side-view mirror spotlights and more.

The F-150 has been America’s best-selling truck for 37 consecutive years and America’s best-selling vehicle for 32 years. Ford sold 763,402 F-150 trucks in 2013.

The trucks will continue to be manufactured at Ford’s Assembly Plant in Dearborn, and at the Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Mo.
