Mark your calendar and prepare your wallet: This Saturday, April 20, marks the sixth annual Record Store Day.

"It's by far our best sales down all year," Rick Leannis, Dearborn Music co-owner said. "Last year we had 125 people lined up before the store even opened."

Founded by an indie record shop employee back in 2007, the movement has become a worldwide phenomenon for musicians and record collectors.

So why is the event so popular?

"It's a celebration of music," Leannis said. "Hundreds of musicians release limited-run music, mostly on vinyl, to the stores on Record Store Day. It's sort of like a lottery where everyone wins."

This year's music ranges from The Doors to Avenged Sevenfold, Mumford & Sons, and Aerosmith and The White Stripes.

"There's roughly 350-400 titles being released for all genres of music," Leannis said. "I don't know what will sell out fast, because the customers surprise us every year."

To help encourage foot traffic, Leannis said Dearborn Music doesn't know how many or what titles it will be receiving until the day before the event.

"Stores get request lists of exclusive items they'd like to sell. We have to put in for a certain number of units depending on the artist, but we don't know what will be delivered for sale, or how many copies, until the event starts," he said.

The store has been participating in Record Store Day since it's inaugural year, but this year will be the first at its new location on Michigan Avenue.

"This should be one of the busiest days of the year for us," he said.

As part of the celebration, the store will offer a 20 percent discount on all vinyl records and used products, including all Record Store Day items. Dearborn Music will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday.

Carl Hultgren, co-owner of Stormy Records, located at 13210 Michigan Ave.,  said his store is also celebrating the event by offering customers 20 to 25 percent off of used CDs and 45 records.

"We are gearing up for our biggest sale of the year," he said. "It's like Black Friday for music lovers."

Hultgren said customers begin lining up at the store typically an hour before it opens.

"We get a mix of record collectors who have to have a certain musician's album, to customers who just want the rare exclusive items," he said. "It's a lot of fun to see people coming back who I haven't seen for a whole year."

Hultgren said the store will be open one hour earlier on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.
