In a market ruled by big box stores, isn't afraid to be unique. In fact, that's exactly why store owners Roslyn Reeves and Naomi Kennedy chose Dearborn as the location for their first-ever store when they opened in 2007.
"We were looking around at places and Dearborn had a nice downtown, but nothing like this," Reeves explains. "We like it here because we can stand out."
And they have, even amidst a less-than-desirable economy that has caused countless west downtown neighbors to shut their doors.
It helps that Reeves, a lifelong fan of fashion, has a bachelor's degree in fashion merchandising. And in Sophia's Giftique, named after Reeves' daughter, it shows.
The store is a mish-mash of everything a girl of any age could ever want. Jewelry, hats, scarves, handbags, stationary, beauty supplies and knick-knacks adorn every usable space in the small store on Mason Street. The shop focuses on unique gifts, and exceptional customer service–including free gift wrap. They'll even order items for customers.
And how's this for one-of-a-kind finds? Their best-selling items, says Reeves, include a line of beauty products called Naked Bee, as well as Poo-Pourri, a before-you-go spray that keeps the bathroom smelling fresh–no matter what.
"We sell things you can't find other places," Reeves says. "If it's in Hallmark or Macy's, we don't want it."
Truly a bastion of small businesses mentality, Reeves' co-owner, Kennedy, is her aunt, and the store sells the Simply Victoria by Victoria Kennedy line of hand-made cards (Reeves’ mom), as well as B3–that's Bath, Body, Beauty–personal care products by Charlotte Sims (Reeves' sister). Local vendors, such as clothing and accessories by , also make cameos.
"We infuse Dearborn when we can," Reeves says.
And they please Dearborn plenty, with most of their customers coming from nearby–because there truly is nothing else like it.
