From the largest donation of food in the 20-year history of the Dearborn Animal Shelter, to thousands of donated dollars and hundreds of helping hands, the employees of Severstal North America have made it their mission to support the shelter’s ongoing efforts to adopt homeless animals.

The Friends for the Dearborn Animal Shelter selected Severstal to receive the shelter’s first annual Community Partner of the Year award.

“Without the generous support of Severstal, our ongoing mission — to care for and eventually find homes for unwanted animals in Dearborn — would be an even tougher job than it already is,” said Elaine Greene, Dearborn Animal Shelter executive director.

“Since 2009, Severstal employees have stepped up in tough times and delivered more than 13,000 pounds of food and more than $10,000 in cash donations. The generosity and community spirit of Severstal employees is a reflection of the company’s values and culture. We are so very grateful for Severstal’s continued support and we are extremely proud to present this award,” Greene said.

The award will be presented to Dennis “DJ” Johnson, Seversal’s vice president of Quality, Advanced Engineering and Continuous Improvement, at the shelter’s popular Black Tie and Tails fundraising dinner at the Dearborn Inn on Friday.

Severstal employees began supporting the Dearborn Animal Shelter in 2009 with fundraising drives and food collections as well as providing volunteers to work at the shelter, caring for animals and helping where needed. Many of the company’s employees have adopted pets from the shelter over the years, as well.

This year’s annual food collection was a company-wide effort, as Severstal’s employees donated 7,268 pounds of dog and cat food.

Since its inception Black Tie & Tails has raised more than $1 million, benefitting more than 25,000 rescues. Tickets for Black Tie & Tails are $175 per person and are available online or by calling the shelter.
