Dearborn Public Schools Hire 59 Teachers to Start 2013 School Year

Teachers participated in a meet and greet with the Board of Education on Monday.

Several new faces greeted students returning to Dearborn Public Schools last week for the start of the 2013 academic year.

As of Aug. 26, the district hired 59 new teachers or instructional staff members, with more expected in the coming weeks.

During a presentation to the Dearborn Public Schools Board of Education on Monday, Superintendent Brian Whiston said the district is down 350 students. Whiston said he expects that number to change within the week.

The district is on track to increase its student population over last year. If that happens, Whiston said the district will have to hire more teachers.

"We understand that some parents are concerned about class sizes, particularly in the kindergarten through third grade, but we're asking parents to be patient while students get settled and we're able to get a more accurate count," Whiston said. "We like to have on average a ratio of 25 (students) per classroom."
