Viewfinder: Civil War Weekend at Greenfield Village

Memorial Day weekend marks the sesquicentennial anniversary of the Civil War at the village, with demonstrations and performances continuing Sunday and Monday.

Memorial Day weekend in Dearborn means that the Civil War comes to life at , with hundreds of performances, demonstrations and reenactors joining the usual scenes for one weekend.

This year marks the 150th–or sesquicentennial–anniversary of the war, which took place from 1861-1865 and resulted in the end of slavery in America.

At Greenfield Village, activity continues Sunday and Monday in one of the busiest weekends of the year for the historical attraction. Activities range from marching, bayonet and artillery drills to presentations of fashions and flags from the era.

In the Adams Home, the scene is set for an 1800s funeral. At Town Hall, the Dodworth Saxhorn Band performs songs from the era along with presentation of a family awaiting a soldier coming home. Visitors can participate in a mock enlistment in the army, commemorate war veterans and see a sock-making demonstration.

The Henry Ford is also hosting a Discovering the Civil War Exhibit through Sept. 5, featuring documents and stories from the National Archives.

Admission to Greenfield Village is $22 for adults, $21 for seniors, $16 for youth and free for children under 5 and members. The village is open 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday and Monday for Civil War Remembrance Weekend. Admission to Henry Ford Museum is $15 for adults, $14 for seniors, $11 for youth and free for children under 5 and members. The museum is open 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. daily.
