Blockbuster Free Films

The Dearborn Public Library continues its series of free films in the HFCL Auditorium on Monday evenings. The lineup is as follows:

MARCH 26—PUSS IN BOOTS (2011) - In this animated fractured fairy tale, the notorious Jack and Jill have the magic beans and Humpty Dumpty, with the aid of Kitty Softpaws, convinces his old friend Puss in Boots to help him steal the beans so they can climb the beanstalk and steal the golden eggs. With gorgeous animation and featuring the voices of Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek, Puss in Boots is a fun and thrilling adventure for the entire family. Nominated for an Academy Award as Best Animated Feature of 2011. (PG, 90 min.)

APRIL 2—BLUE HAWAII (1961) - Elvis Presley stars as Chad, fresh out of the Army and back home in Hawaii where his family expects him to run the family business. Elvis, however, has other ideas, including singing, surfing and romancing the ladies. Songs include the title tune and the lovely “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” Rescheduled from last summer’s canceled screening. (Not Rated, 102 min.)

APRIL 9—HUGO (2011) - Set in 1930s Paris, an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station is wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father, leading him to the re-discovery of the legendary film pioneer Georges Melies. Nominated for an Academy Award as Best Picture of 2011 and based on the award-winning book The Adventures of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick.  Directed by Martin Scorsese. (Rated PG, 126 min.)

APRIL 16—GHOSTS OF THE ABYSS (2006) - Remember the sinking of the Titanic 100 years ago with this special screening of the extended cut of James Cameron’s documentary. Utilizing state-of-the-art technology, the film will amaze and move you as the wreckage of the Titanic is explored like never before, revealing glimpses into the passengers and crew who worked, lived and died there. (Not rated, 90 min.)

APRIL 23—THE MUPPETS (2011) - On vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, and his friends Gary (Jason Segel) and Mary (Amy Adams), discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman to raze the Muppet Theater and drill for the oil recently discovered beneath the Muppets’ former stomping grounds. To stage The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise the $10 million needed to save the theater, Walter, Mary and Gary must help Kermit the Frog reunite the Muppets for one more show. (Rated PG, 103 min.)

APRIL 30—PROJECT NIM (2011) - In the 1970s, a chimpanzee named Nim became the focus of a landmark experiment which aimed to show that an ape could learn to communicate with language if raised and nurtured like a human child. What we learn about his true nature – and indeed our own – is comic, revealing and profoundly unsettling. An acclaimed documentary by the director of Man on Wire. (Rated PG-13, 93 min.)

MAY 7—THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN (2011) - Intrepid young reporter Tintin, accompanied by his faithful dog Snowy, races to uncover the secrets of a sunken ship that may hold a vast fortune -- but also an ancient curse. Together the two encounter a series of colorful characters and perilous adventures along the way, all rendered in stunning motion-capture animation. Directed by Steven Spielberg. (PG, 107 min.)
