Dearborn Symphony Orchestra Launches New Social Group for Young Professionals

College students and young families can network at "afterglow" events following orchestra concerts.

The Dearborn Symphony Orchestra is hoping to attract a younger audience to its concerts beginning this year with the launch of "Forte," a social networking group for college students and professionals.

"We want to bring in a younger crowd to see and become involved with the symphony," organizer Jessica Matthews of Dearborn said.

Members of Forte can enjoy special afterglow events such as a beer tasting or swing dancing class, while meeting other professionals after attending the orchestra's concerts.

"Our focus is on college students, young professionals, recent graduates, and young families ages 21 through 49," Matthews said. "People can network with us as they learn about the orchestra's music and education programs at fun and friendly mixers."

The first event is scheduled for May 3, following the orchestra's final concert of the 2013 season. Light refreshments and spirits will be served. The cost is $35 for the concert and afterglow event, or $15 for the afterglow event only (with prior purchase of an orchestra ticket.)

"A lot of people go out for a drink after the show to relax. We're bringing that idea of a casual social atmosphere to the place where the symphony is already at with a goal of reaching a larger audience," Matthews said.

Tickets can be purchased by emailing forte@dearbornsymphony.org or calling the symphony box office at 313-565-2424. Cash or checks are preferred.
