The beauty of India and the marvel of fiber arts will be on display in the Padziesky Gallery at the this August, courtesy of artist Boisali Biswas.

Biswas, a resident of West Bloomfield, combines media such as textile, fiber art, canvas and acrylics to create works of art reflective of her Indian heritage and her motivation grounded in daily life.

“I'm inspired by various things–nature, colors, prehistoric arts, Indian folk art, architecture," said Biswas. "Anything beautiful around me; life in general.”

Each piece of Biswas’ intricate work originates as a sketch, transforming into an elaborate, unique piece as the initial idea materializes.

“I generally paint on the paintable white wallpaper like a canvas with acrylics, then cut them up into horizontal strips and weave back into the picture, inserting a variety of materials like yarns and fabrics in between,” Biswas describes. “In some pieces, when there are a combination of techniques, such as weaving or surface design involved, I do that before putting together the piece.”

Biswas began her undergraduate studies at Viswa-Bharati University in India, participating in a five-year program and specializing in textiles. In addition, she earned her master's degree at Bowling Green State University.

Now approaching nearly 12 years in Michigan, Biswas has no problems filling any of her free time. When not focusing on her art, she works with local galleries, acquires commission work, presents her work to regional art groups, and actively raises her two children. Additionally, she teaches classes at her home studio or through Wayne State University’s Michigan Surface Design program.

“Michigan Surface Design is a non-profit organization comprising of Fiber Art artists, mainly,” Biswas explains. “We try to have a monthly meeting with a workshop or lecture by either local artists or ones well-known from other states. ... Members use various techniques for their work.”

Throughout it all, Biswas has worked with fiber arts–approaching 20 years in the art.

“I have always been intrigued by textiles," she said. "The textures, the feel, and the innumerable possibilities with the medium."

Biswas invites anyone to her home studio and small gallery with advanced notice. She can be reached at boisali@yahoo.com. View her art at http://ebiswas.zenfolio.com.
