The Dearborn Public Library is asking residents to share their stories about pets or wildlife, as part of The Big Read celebration of Jack London's "The Call of the Wild."

A portion of the submitted stories will be published in the library's short story collection "Call of the Wild Dearborn: Animal Tales."

Writers of all ages may submit stories for publication.

Possible story topics include:

  • A short story, poem or essay about your pet or any animal (real or fictional)

  • A short story, poem or essay about the environment, nature or wildlife

  • A short story told from the perspective of your pet or any animal (“The Call of the Wild” is told from the perspective of a dog named Buck.)

  • An essay about “The Call of the Wild”

To participate, email your short story (or other written work) of one to four pages, along with one or two sentences about yourself, to hfischer@ci.dearborn.mi.us by Feb. 1.

The content should be in a Word document or written as text in the email message. Submissions should also include a release form, which is available at dearbornlibrary.org.

Photos and artwork are welcome and can be emailed along with your text.

Copies of the short story collection will also be available for purchase on the library's website. All proceeds from the book sales will benefit the Dearborn Public Library.
