What’s the best island in the United States?
Close, but no. Not yet anyway.
Michigan’s touristy Mackinac Island is currently the the second-most popular U.S. island in a USA Today poll that runs through June 2.
Mackinac’s most serious competition in the newspaper’s 10Best Readers’ Choice poll comes from Puerto Rico. Others in the Top 5 are Mount Desert Island in Maine, Whidbey Island in Washington and Amelia Island in Florida.
Twenty islands were selected by USA Today editors for the poll, based on several criteria, including beauty, accessibility, variety of terrain, things to do, wildlife, local culture and popularity.
The winners will be revealed on June 4.
Offering rugged terrain, breathtaking coastal views, carriage tours that take guests back in time, and grand resort hotels, Mackinac Island has previously been voted one of the 10 Best Islands in the World by Condé Nast Traveler,
