Twelve sculptures have been placed throughout Dearborn as part of the community’s 2013-2014 Art in Public Places: Midwest Sculpture Initiative.

Funding for the project is provided by the Dearborn Community Fund and the East and West Dearborn Downtown Development Authorities. Each month a different sculpture and sculptor are highlighted.

“Curves,” by Pontiac sculptor Ray Katz is the August sculpture of the month. The piece, located on the grounds of the Dearborn Historical Museum’s Commandant Quarters on Michigan Avenue at Monroe Street, is playful but sturdy by nature of the metal from which it is sculpted.

Katz works in many mediums, but based on the quantity of major sculptures he has produced, metals are his preference. As he notes in his artist statement: “Metal remains my passion.”

Katz has had other work juried in to previous Dearborn exhibits. In 2012, his painted steel piece titled “Geometric Construction” was on view at the Schaefer Plaza in East Dearborn, and in 2011 “Winter Moon” was situated at City Hall Park on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Maple streets.

Katz studied at Eastern Michigan University and received a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Wayne State University. His sculptures have been included in collections throughout Michigan and public exhibitions such as the Dogwood Arts Festival in Knoxville, Tenn., where he was a second-place award winner.

Recent purchases for public collections include: “Art in the City,” Mount Vernon, Ill.; the Sculpture Walk in Columbus, Ga., and the Trust for Public Sculpture in Hamilton, N.J.
