Obama Names UM-Dearborn Professor to Science Award Panel

Hyman Bass of Dearborn will serve on the president's National Medal of Science Committee.

President Obama has nominated a University of Michigan-Dearborn professor to a panel that oversees the selection of the National Medal of Science recepient.

According to U.S. Rep. John Dingell, D-District 12, Obama picked mathematician Hyman Bass for the President's Committee on the National Medal of Science. Bass won the medal in 2006.

"I congratulate Dr. Bass on again receiving this truly remarkable honor. His work throughout the years in mathematics and mathematics education has already left a lasting mark on our University of Michigan students, and I am thrilled to see his continued recognition by President Obama for all of his work," Dingell said.

"I am certain that he will continue to serve as a knowledgeable and valuable committee member. Today, I join with the entire U-M community in congratulating Dr. Bass on all of his contributions to our campus, our community, our state, and this great nation.”

UM-Dearborn's faculty website says that Bass' publications include broad areas of algebra, geometry, topology, and number theory. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
