“The Life List” was published by Random House Publishers and released in the United States on July 2.

The book centers on a woman in her 30s named Brett, who has a cushy job, a posh apartment and a handsome boyfriend. When Brett’s beloved mother passes away, she leaves behind a will with one big stipulation: in order to receive her inheritance, Brett must complete the list of life goals she had written when she was a 14-year-old naïve teenager. Suddenly Brett finds herself on an unexpected journey.

“A few years ago, I came across an abandoned life list I’d written as a teen,” Spielman said. “‘Lori’s List’ was penciled across a piece of yellowed notebook paper, along with 27 goals I believed would lead to a happy life. The list and those dreams became the seed for my novel.”

Spielman, a resident of East Lansing, is a former speech pathologist and high school guidance counselor, and currently works as a homebound teacher for inner-city students. She will speak about her experiences writing and publishing her debut novel, and will also read excerpts.
