Help This UM-Dearborn Student Preserve Endangered Species in California

Zach Muzzin is hoping to raise $700 to help reduce the cost of his Alternative Spring Break trip to Catalina Island, Ca.

University of Michigan-Dearborn student Zach Muzzin is planning on taking an Alternative Spring Break trip to Catalina Island, Ca., in February 2014, to help protect endangered species.

He is hoping to raise $700 on GoFundMe.com by February to help reduce the cost of the trip. He started the campaign on Nov. 3, 2013 and raised $123 so far.

During his time in California, Muzzin will be working on various environmental service projects with the Catalina Island Conservancy, a private land trust that protects nearly 90 percent of the island.

Catalina Island is home to 60 plant, animal and insect species found nowhere else in the world, according to the conservancy's website.

"We will be working to remove invasive plant species as well as help preserve endangered species on the island, including the ever shrinking fox population," he said. "I greatly appreciate any donation and know that your contribution is not only going to a great cause but is also providing me with an experience I can learn from and bring home with me to better our own community."
