Dearborn’s Art in Public Places “Stainless Steel Butterfly” Featured Sculpture of December

This month's featured sculpture is the "Stainless Steel Butterfly," located at the corner of Michigan Ave. and Maple in Dearborn's City Hall Park.

Twelve sculptures have been placed throughout the city as part of Dearborn's 2013-2014 Art in Public Places – Midwest Sculpture Initiative.

A different sculpture is highlighted each month by the Dearborn Community Fund, which provides funding for the project along with the East and West Dearborn Downtown Development Authorities.

This month's featured sculpture is the "Stainless Steel Butterfly," located at the corner of Michigan Ave. and Maple in Dearborn’s City Hall Park. It was created by sculptor James Havens to exemplify his interest in nature and his "less is more" artistic philosophy.

A retired ironworker, Havens brings his experience in the trade to the sculptural pieces he creates and to the classroom as an artistic welding instructor at Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio. He owns and operates Havens Studio and the Rose Bronze Foundry in Woodville, Ohio and also serves as curator for “Sculpture in the Village” in Gibsonburg, Ohio, DCF reported.

Havens’ sculptures can be found in permanent collections across the country, and as far away as India and Nicaragua. He has also been a participating artist in ArtPrize, which takes place each fall in Grand Rapids, and he is an ongoing participant with MSI.
