The Dearborn Animal Shelter currently has 65 dogs in its care, leaving no cages unoccupied for strays found in the community.

Nearly half of those dogs have been at the shelter for at least 31 days, and to help encourage adoptions of these longer term dogs, the shelter is offering a new 50/50 special -- A $50 adoption fee and a $50 voucher for the pet’s first veterinary visit.

Any of the dogs in the care of the shelter for 31 days or more are eligible for this special reduced rate and voucher package. All adoption fees include sterilization, microchip and vaccinations, according to the shelter.

The offer will remain in effect until the dog population returns to a manageable number.
