Answer the "Call of the Wild" Saturday at The Henry Ford

Public invited to 10 weeks of Big Read Dearborn events

The public is invited to The Henry Ford for the March 8 launch of the Dearborn Public Library’s 10-week literary adventure called The Big Read. This free event will include a number of activities in the Henry Ford Museum’s Prechter Promenade and Anderson Theater from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

The Big Read encourages residents of all ages to enjoy Jack London’s classic American novel The Call of the Wild through a variety of interactive opportunities taking place within the community.

Complimentary copies of the book will be available at the kickoff event, where visitors will be able to listen to a dramatic reading from the story by the Players Guild of Dearborn, followed by a screening of Charlie Chaplin’s silent comedy film The Gold Rush.

The kickoff also will feature music from the time period of the Klondike Gold Rush, a cold-weather camping demo from the Boy Scouts, a photo opportunity with real dog sled equipment and prospecting gear, artwork from Dearborn Public School students, and an arts and crafts activity for kids.

Across Dearborn, more than 30 activities are planned from March 8 to May 17, 2014, courtesy of the library, The Henry Ford and other community partners to celebrate The Big Read, a grant program from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and Arts Midwest.

The Dearborn Public Library is one of 77 organizations that received a grant in May 2013 to host a Big Read program in their community.

The program is designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment.

In addition to discussions, art activities, film screenings, lectures, photo competitions, and other events designed to discover the themes of The Call of the Wild, the book also will be integrated into the curriculum at several local schools.

The program will wrap up in May with a special celebration at the Dearborn Public Library featuring activities for the entire community.
