Parents Invited to Experience “Student Life” at Dearborn Heights

Dearborn Heights Montessori Center (DHMC) encourages prospective parents to view classrooms in session to gain a better understanding of authentic Montessori programs and how students learn and interact.

Families of children aged 18 months through 14 years are invited to the school’s campus to visit classrooms for toddlers through middle school.  Tours will be held during daytime Open Houses scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 25, and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26, 2014.  The school is located at 466 N. John Daly in Dearborn Heights.

“Parents often comment about the peaceful feeling of our classrooms and the flow of activities throughout our school” said Kay Neff, Head of Schools, who recalled her first experience with Montessori before founding DHMC 42 years ago. “I was seeking a stimulating yet comfortable learning environment for my children, and I found it through Montessori.”

Unlike traditional classrooms with rows of desks, children learn in flexible and informal multi-age settings. Each classroom is well-organized, inviting, and uniquely suited to the needs of its students. As an example, toddler and preschool rooms feature low sinks, chairs, and tables; easily reachable shelves, and child-sized kitchen tools—elements that allow independence and help develop small motor skills.

Students in upper grades work independently and in small groups to foster collaboration and develop problem- solving skills.

DHMC’s curriculum focuses on each student’s ongoing development with practical life skills and sensorial exercises as well as a strong foundation in academic skills including reading, writing, math, grammar, geography, botany, and history. Along with providing outstanding academic programs provided by experienced and well-trained staff, DHMC offers foreign languages, art, music, physical education, technology, field trips, and in-house presentations as well as before- and after- school care, and a themed summer camp.

Information and registration for DHMC’s nine-week Summer Camp program, which begins June 16 and extends through August15, will also be available during the daytime Open Houses.

The 2014 Montessori-enriched summer program includes a variety of exciting themes along with daily math and language, science, physical education, art, and technology.  In addition, children enjoy a rich variety of indoor and outdoor activities along with in-house presentations and field trips.
