Learning and a Triple, Venti, Half Sweet, Non-Fat Caramel Macchiato are in Students’ Hands at Blended Learning School

Students from Nexus Academy of Royal Oak, a tuition-free, public “blended” learning school for students in grades 9-12, recently staged a “Mobile Learn-In” at a local  Starbucks to demonstrate  that their education is in their hands with the ability to learn and complete  school work wherever a Wi-Fi connection is available.

“We wanted to show the community exactly what we do and what 21st century education looks like in a fun and creative way,” said Dale Bernard, principal. “The Mobile Learn-In was a great opportunity to highlight the blended learning approach  and how its flexibility works for many  students in this generation.”

Nexus Academy of Royal Oak is redefining high school for 21st Century learners by offering a uniquely designed physical campus where teachers interact with students both online and on-site. The students spend four hours a day four days a week in a brick-and-mortar school, with students conducting the rest of their learning at their own pace online at home or wherever they have a Wi-Fi connection.

To highlight their school’s unique learning model, the students staged the “Mobile Learn-In” in a local Starbucks to finish studying for finals and to complete any last minute assignments, all while enjoying one of the coffee shops many delicious treats.   An onsite teacher assisted students with their studies while students networked, studied and worked together in the untraditional setting.
