Oakwood, American Cancer Society Team Up to Create New Resource Center

Additional cancer support is now available at Oakwood, from diagnosis through all stages of treatment.

In an effort to provide additional care and support for local cancer patients, Oakwood Healthcare and the American Cancer Society have teamed up to create a new Cancer Resource Center at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn.

“It’s an extra layer of support,” said Emily Saoud from the American Cancer Society, in a statement. “We want people to know it’s not just doctors and nurses behind their treatment. It’s a community effort.”

The Cancer Resource Center, located in the lobby of the Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center's Radiation Oncology Department, offers many different forms of assistance, both online and in person.

It provides ways for patients and caregivers to connect with survivors and other volunteers – either one on one or in groups – to share experiences, learn about cancer, and gain encouragement, according to an Oakwood news release.

Kathy Abarr, a Dearborn Heights resident, is the lead volunteer for the resource center - making rounds, talking with patients and their families, and leading group discussions.

“It’s been so uplifting for me,” said Abarr, a breast cancer survivor. “I look forward to coming in to work and helping people. I let them know I’m here for them. Sometimes they just want to talk.”

The center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about the Cancer Resource Center, call (800) 227-2345 or visit www.oakwood.org/cancer-care.
