On May 5, 1868 General John A. "Blackjack" Logan issued Grand Army of the Republic General Order #17, proclaiming each May 30 as a day to remember those lost in the late American Civil War. This was the beginning of the modern Memorial Day.
On May 30, 2012 Sergeant John S. Cosbey Camp #427, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War will conduct an 11th annual Decoration Day Ceremony - taken from the same ceremony that would have occurred each May 30 during the 1890's - on the front lawn of the Dearborn Historical Museum's Commandant's Quarter, 21950 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn, 48124, beginning at 6:00 PM.
Although the ceremony is Civil War specific, it is intended to honor all veterans.
The public is welcome to attend.
