A west Dearborn restaurant has recently expanded, offering a new setting for both their traditional burger-and-fries meals, as well as a new cafe menu. Dubbed the iBurger Cafe, it offers Lavazza coffee, several espresso drinks, as well as Italian sodas and smoothies. Patrons can relax on a number of plush couches, plug in with free Open Dearborn wi-fi, and watch TV on one of the cafe's flat-screen televisions. The original iBurger opened in 2010. When Gentlemen First barbershop opened their doors in west Dearborn five weeks ago, it was a homecoming celebration. Originally located on Ford Road near Fordson High School, the shop relocated to a larger space in Allen Park several years ago. But they're back, downsizing and keeping things simple at their new—and hopefully permanent—home. The walls are already decorated with an array of pictures, sports memorabilia, and historical items from Dearborn's past–like a "No Soliciting" sign from Mayor Orville Hubbard. Flat-screen TVs allow visitors to watch whatever game is on, and a fresh pot of…
Noticeably absent from Dearborn's summer scene? Places to go for a cool, icy treat. Cold Stone on Michigan Avenue closed in 2011, while Stucci's on Telegraph Road shut its doors in February of this year. But it appears a new, relatively unknown player is coming to town–Yogurtown, that is. On Michigan Avenue, nestled just west of Frida Mexican Restaurant, signs proclaim that Yogurtown will open soon in the west downtown strip. The shop will sell frozen yogurt, though it's not clear when it will open. Will you stop by to try it out?

The Dearborn Andiamo will be among three of the metro Detroit restaurant chain's locations that will be converted to a Joe Vicari's Andiamo Italian Steakhouse in early August, the Detroit Free Press reported recently. The new menu will feature high-quality steaks and chops, more fresh seafood and updated sides and salads to pair with the traditional pasta dishes "that made us who we are today," Vicari told the paper. Inspired by a recent trip to Italy, Vicari explained that he wanted to build off their top seller, filet, and provide customers their Italian favorites while giving them an …
Plymouth business Wilcox Consignment is planning a move to Dearborn, owner Aida Wilcox told Patch recently. The downtown store held a sale over the weekend in an effort to sell off merchandise and thus lessen the burden of the move, Wilcox said. "Thanks to all my customers," she said. "I hope to see them around because I still live in town." Wilcox said the store hasn't decided on a location in Dearborn yet, and she said she will take time much-needed time off before making the move. The store has been on Wing Street in downtown Plymouth for more than two years, Wilcox said. Cynthia Levin of …
Oakwood Healthcare this week celebrated the opening of its new Corporate Services Atrium. The atrium connects the two office buildings on Lundy Parkway in Dearborn that serve as the health care system's corporate headquarters. Oakwood moved its headquarters in October 2011 after leasing two buildings owned by Ford Land. The move to the 135,000-square-foot total space was "designed to reduce costs and promote a more collaborative work environment," according to a release issued by Ford Land. The grand opening for the atrium was attended by Oakwood and Dearborn officials, including state Rep. …
West downtown Dearborn could soon be home to two new hookah lounges. Special land use requests and site plans for both hopeful businesses were approved Monday by the Dearborn City Plan Commission unanimously. Hookahs are water pipes used for the recreational smoking of flavored tobacco. Lounges that rent out the pipes for use have become more common throughout the U.S., including southeastern Michigan. The first new such business in Dearborn, La Hookah, would be located in the West Village Commons at 22261 Michigan Ave., just south of Le Cigar. The petitioner, Najim Rizk, is the owner of both…
Remember when getting "good" fireworks meant a trip to Toledo? A clear sign of the change in Michigan's laws for the Fourth of July goodies is highly visible in Dearborn: Crazy Steve's Fireworks is now open in west downtown. Located at 22275 Michigan Ave., the store is locally owned and stocked with bottle rockets, firecrackers, Roman candles and more. Open since June 18, an employee at the store said that business hasn't been particularly heavy. However, owner Yasir Kaskorkis told the Dearborn Press and Guide that they expect sales will continue to pick up as July 4 nears.“Since we put our …
Anyone who frequents Kelly’s Irish Pub has no doubt noticed that the long-time Dearborn bar has been closed since June 14. It’s not going anywhere, though. It’s just undergoing some renovations by its new management. “We want to keep it a neighborhood Irish pub,” said owner Dan Helka. “Everyone knows the name Kelly’s.” Helka–with friend John Carone and brother Dennis–bought the place off of Jim Kelly, who founded the establishment over 30 years ago. “I always told Jim that if he ever retired, I wanted to buy the place,” Helka said. And that’s exactly what happened. Kelly retired and sold his …
Doriguzzi Photographic Artistry owner Rich Duzzi wants his customers to know: He hasn't gone out of business! However, the Dearborn-based photography business closed its Monroe Street studio on June 1, Duzzi confirmed. "We have simply decided to ... work solely on location," he explained. "This will allow us to create truly personal images for you–our clients and our friends." However, he added, it will bring an end to the company's passport portraits and "Business Portrait Wednesdays." Doriguzzi Photographic Artistry has been in business for 43 years in southeast Michigan. Learn more on …
When Dearborn Music moved to its current location in west downtown Dearborn, the year was 1959. Then owned by the father of current proprietor Rick LeAnnais, the music industry–and the city of Dearborn–were very different than they are today. And so, like the switch from records to tapes to CDs to digital, Dearborn Music is changing, too: By this fall, if all goes as expected, the store will have a new home. Albeit, they're only moving three blocks west to the old Pier One store on Newman Street, but the decision was still a tough one. "It really is a difficult decision," LeAnnais said. "The …
After a little less than two years in business, Dearborn restaurant Cedars Coney Island and Grille has closed its doors, Dearborn Patch confirmed Friday. The restaurant was located off of Michigan Avenue on the Newman Street strip, tucked between Shawarma Place and Biggby Coffee. Owners of the restaurant Ali and Sam Berro, who were local to Dearborn, were not immediately available for comment. However, employees in nearby businesses said that the owners cleared out the spot within the past week. After renovating the spot, Cedars opened in July 2010. At the time, Sam Berro told the Dearborn …
West downtown Dearborn appears to be set to get another spot for sushi. Downtown lunch spot Salad Wrappers, located on Howard Street, has closed for business. However, signs on the doors indicate that the spot will reopen on Friday, June 1–but as Joa Sushi. The restaurant will join an already bustling Japanese food market in west Dearborn: Crave Lounge, Kabuki Restaurant and O'Sushi Restaurant are all located within a one-mile radius of the soon-to-be-opened spot. O'Sushi expanded its location in the Newman Street strip in 2011.
As the days warm up, outdoor seating at restaurants is going to become much more popular. At Good Times Caffe, located at 22180 Michigan Ave., owners Bilal Mroue and Nick Sleiman recently opened a patio for patrons to enjoy a little sun with their food. “With outdoor seating, it’s going to help bring in more people," Mroue said. Mroue highlighted ice cream and hookahs as some customer favorites to enjoy outside during warm weather. Good Times Caffe has been open since April 2011. Mroue is still planning a one-year anniversary party. Mroue and Sleiman are both Dearborn natives. Mroue attended …
There are few better ways to commemorate a loved one who loved to cook than by opening a restaurant in her name. But that’s just what’s going on at Elena’s Mexican Carry-Out. The family business, which is named after the late Flores family matriarch, opened Apr. 18 at 24142 Michigan Ave. in west Dearborn. Elena was “always proud of her food and proud to hand it down to us,” said Mariana Flores, co-owner of Elena’s and the namesake’s granddaughter-in-law. Mariana, with her husband Alex Flores and mother-in-law Phyllis Bhea-Flores, cooked up the idea for a traditional Mexican carry-out …
Tijuana’s Mexican Kitchen opens for business this week at 18950 Ford Road, approximately a half mile west of the Southfield Freeway on the border of Dearborn and Detroit. It's a long awaited return for the owners, who served the area from mid-1990s until 2003. “I always loved our Ford Road location, but we moved to Lincoln Park when an opportunity came along to purchase a building,” said Marisa Garcia, Tijuana’s owner. In 2009, she expanded her business with a second location in Southgate, Tijuana’s Mexican Kitchen Express, to handle carry out and delivery orders. Based on the success of the…
It has been 35 years since Silvia Beasley began running her salon business in Dearborn. Nearly two decades ago, that business became Silvia on Monroe Salon and Spa, located in the heart of west downtown Dearborn. But on April 8, the salon will close its doors. Salon personnel tell Patch that the closure has to do with Beasley's decision to retire, and was not due to economic conditions. The salon will offer its usual hair and spa services through April 7, and is still taking appointments. Meanwhile, the 6,000-square-foot space, located on the corner of Monroe Street and West Village Drive, is…
Another Dearborn store is closing up shop. "Stucchi's of Dearborn is closing its doors for business," the Telegraph Road ice cream shop announced Saturday on its Facebook page. The store is offering $1 scoops of ice cream while supplies last, and urges owners of gift certificates to use them now, as Stucchi's gift cards are not transferable to other locations. Owner Mona Jaber told Dearborn Patch last summer that she had been feeling the pain of down economic times for months. A slow August, thanks mainly to Ramadan keeping daytime customers away, left times tighter than usual. Special offers…
