The center allows working adults to finish their bachelor's and master's degrees in various disciplines with an accelerated curriculum.
Concordia University's accelerated learning center in Dearborn is gearing up for its grand opening, and has begun accepting applicants for its summer and fall classes. Saul Davis, the center’s director and student manager, said Concordia will host a welcoming event aimed at generating interest for prospective students on May 15. Students can learn about the college's classes, meet with financial advisers, and tour the new facility, located inside the Great Lakes Members Credit Union building at 22720 Michigan Ave. Anyone who attends the May 15 event can also receive an application waiver (a $50 value) just for attending. Hundreds of dog owners filled Ford Field Park to help raise money for shelter adoptions on May 11.
Pet lovers turned out en masse for Saturday's Mutt Strut fundraiser for the Dearborn Animal Shelter. The Mutt Strut & Pet Expo is the largest gathering of pet fans in the area, and this year it raised more than $70,000, Kelle Sisung, development director for the Friends for the Dearborn Animal Shelter said. "Without this event, we couldn't help rescue a lot of the animals," she said. This year's top individual pledge winner was Dolores O'Berts ($1,447). Tom Fisher also received $1,300 in pledges. The K-9 Explorers, led by shelter manager Heather Mehi, raised $15,984 in pledges as a team. Mehi individually raised $11,800. A ceremonial ribbon cutting took place outside the store, located at 22191 Michigan Ave. The business has been a longtime staple of the downtown Dearborn community, and moved from its previous location at 2223 Michigan Ave. at the beginning of March. The Dearborn Animal Shelter's dog walk and community-wide pet celebration benefits homeless animals.
The Dearborn Animal Shelter's eighth annual Mutt Strut & Pet Expo will take place this weekend at Ford Field. The event is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 11 and is expected to draw hundreds of dog lovers throughout Southeast Michigan to Dearborn. Elaine Greene, executive director for the Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter, said the event is the largest gathering of pet fans in the area. Friends, family and dozens of customers filled the lobby at Yogurtown in Dearborn on Friday to celebrate the restaurant's grand opening. The business officially opened its doors in January, however owner Celia Nasser said her family wanted to wait until the spring to celebrate its success. More than 50 free comic book titles were given away to eager fans at Green Brain Comics in Dearborn on Saturday.
Free Comic Book Day took place Saturday at Green Brain Comics in east Dearborn, bringing in hundreds of people looking to have some fun and check out the latest comics. The event included music, animation workshops and special guest appearances by several Michigan comic book artists such as David Petersen, creator of the international bestseller Mouse Guard, and Jeremy Bastia, creator of Cursed Pirate Girl. Detroit artist Martin Hirchak, creator of Pop Art Funnies, said he enjoyed meeting with children throughout the afternoon. "The more children read, the better our society will be," he said.
