Mother Nature is being kind to Yogurtown, Dearborn's newest west downtown business.

As the self-serve frozen yogurt restaurant prepares to open at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, temperatures will hit an unseasonable high of the mid 50s.

Perfect weather for ice cream.

The business, owned by Dearborn residents Mike and Celia Nasser, has been a long time coming.

Signs first appeared at the shop—located at 22055 Michigan Ave.—in August 2012. They had been shooting for a September opening, but construction schedules kept pushing the date back.

The renovations to the building explain why. Formerly Bart's Orthopedic Shoe Repair, the space had to be transformed into a family-friendly ice cream shop. The thought put into the design is evident, from the pops of pink and green detailing to the classy stone work in the interior and exterior.

Celia Nasser said they hope to provide a clean, welcoming, kid-friendly atmosphere.

“The kids get to come in and they’ll love it because they get to make their own flavors and put whatever toppings they want on it,” she said.

The business will welcome customers in starting Saturday through both their front and back entrances, with several free parking spots in the back.

Price is determined by weight, and everything is self-serve. So if a customer just wants a little cup of vanilla, or an overflowing mixture of flavors and toppings, they can get it.

Mike Nasser said they plan to offer frequency discounts, and will add outdoor seating in the spring in time for a grand opening in March or April.

But for now, customers can get cozy inside and enjoy some dessert.

Yogurtown is open 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 11 a.m.-midnight Friday and Saturday. They accept cash and credit cards. Find them on Facebook.

Good luck. I hope everyone patronizes this business. Those who muster the courage and take on the risk of opening local small businesses deserve our support.

Very excited about this! My family often wishes there were an ice cream shop close enough to walk to from home or pop in after dinner downtown!

Amazing!! The yogurt does not have much calories, and there are many toppings, including fresh fruit like strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and kiwi. I went today and plan to go again tomorrow for the mouthwatering, healthy treat.

I came in after going to Frida for dinner on Friday while the staff was preparing for the Saturday launch. Instead of turning us away (and many others coming by under the same notion that it was already open), the owner's invited us in for free frozen yogurt!

If they keep that sort of welcoming attitude to patrons, they will be very successful. Oh, and the frozen yogurt was great!
