Who Will Run For Mayor of Dearborn in 2013?

Elections for mayor and all seven council seats will take place in November.

Only one petition has been pulled for the Dearborn 2013 mayoral race, but that hasn't stopped residents from voicing their opinions on who else should run for the city's top elected spot.

The mayor's seat, plus all seven Dearborn City Council seats, are up for reelection this November. Several residents have already pulled petitions to run for council.

The sole petitioner as of Jan. 28 is Edward Binkley, a longtime resident and supporter of the Dearborn Historical Museum and city recreation programs.

Aside from Binkley and current Mayor Jack O'Reilly, several names are being thrown around as possible candidates in online social spheres—including current City Council President Tom Tafelski and Wayne County Commission Chairman Gary Woronchak.

Facebook page urging Woronchak to run for mayor has garnered more than 100 "likes," though it's not clear who created the page.

"Nobody is more qualified," one supporter wrote on the page. "We've supported him and we've had a sign on our lawn for him for the past 25 years."

Woronchak told Patch he has no idea who created the page, but was flattered to see it.

"It certainly is gratifying to know that some of my fellow Dearborn residents have such faith and confidence in me, and would think of me and the work I've done for our community in such a complimentary way," he said. "I was quite surprised to see that someone created that page on Facebook."

Similarly, several calls for Tafelski to run for mayor have surfaced on social media, and on the pages of Dearborn Patch—especially in regard to conversations about the decision to move Dearborn City Hall. Tafelski has been an outspoken opponent of the move, which has the support of Mayor Jack O'Reilly.

"Looks to me like Tom Tafelski has taken off his socks and shoes and is dipping his toes into the mayoral pool," commented Patch reader James in regard to Tafelski's strong stance on city hall.

"Tom certainly has the experience and is the only other person I would endorse, regardless of anyone else entering the race," added reader laplateau. "But, he needs to know there is support for him out here in the general Dearborn populace."

Candidates for all races have until May 14 to submit 100 valid signatures and be placed on the ballot. A primary election will be held in August if the number of candidates for a particular race is more than double the available seats. If not, candidates will move straight to November's general election.

Doesn't the current Mayor have to pull a petition, too, if he's going to run?

yes, anyone running for Mayor or City Council, whether a first timer or an incumbent, must pull petitions. I wouldn't expect any of the incumbents to pull their petitions this early.

Gary Woronchak?...the guy who is the Chairman of the Wayne County Commission? ...the one that was the Chairman that was there when exorbitant salaries and perquisites were given to so many select favorites of Ficano? The same guy who, with the rest of the Commission, now expresses ignorance of things like Tukia Mulin receiving a $200,00 severance package...when she was voluntarily leaving her post for another county position? He, along with the rest of that Commission are the absolute realisms of the "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil and go-along-to-get-along representation that has plagued so many other government levels for so long...especially Wayne County. Let's get real; if Gary Woronchak is someone's choice, we might as well keep hizzoner O'Reilly who is the epitome of favoritisms.

Well said. Gary has obviously been asleep at the wheel while on the Wayne County commission and has turned into a career politician. Let's not forget that he conveniently changed political parties (from Republican to Democrat) shortly after he used Republican party resources to get elected to a state post.

Tom has to learn how to have patience with people - watch him at the end of a council meeting when its open to the public for questions. He can hardly wait to get rid of them same way O'Reilly handled people (and still does) when he was Pres. of the Council.

My vote goes to Mayor O'Reilly. I've known him and worked with him for most of my life - and I can tell you we are fortunate to have a person of his book smarts and street smarts willing to serve. He's a great guy and deserves re-election. Gary Woronchak is also a 40-year friend and colleague who I admire greatly. What he's doing now downtown is too important for him to leave! Nonetheless, he can and should move up the political ladder one of these days. He deserves it!

Tom Tafelski would get my vote. Years ago when he first ran for the council, he knocked on my door, and took the time to answer many questions, got my vote, and still lost. Since then, a much more positive political picture for Tom, and I hope he still has the patience given to me that day long ago,

Mr. Binkley, I take it that you are the Edward Binkley named in the main story. If so, I see that you work in a gas station in W. Dbn. Is this correct ? If so, working for 10 $ per day, which is not even federal minimum wage, would enable you to understand what life is like for the majority of the American population today. Certainly not a population that can support tax increases solely for the maintenance of status quo union contract wage and benefit preservation packages enjoyed by certain city departments here, especially that last 3 1/2 % increase in property taxes, foolishly passed, (or so THEY say), by the voters to service that status quo. Taxes on homes/property that has plummeted downward in value for the past 4 years. Certainly, 18 to 25 year old's have won elections for mayoral office in the past. However, I support Mr. Tafelski for Mayor, should he choose to run. Perhaps....YOU could be appointed Budget Director under a Tafelski administration here in Dbn. Making the kind of wages that you claim to make, you would certainly be frugal and know how to stretch a buck. In today's circumstances that would be an admirable talent. I think what Dbn needs, ultimately, is an Emergency Finance Manager, to bust and throw out all these sweetheart union deals around here.

Fred, I know you would support O'Reilly. You are a liberal Democrat that served under the original Mayor O'Reilly. O'Reilly is an arrogant thug and panders to the lowest denominator. He is allowing parts of this city to fall apart and instructs his people in Residential Services to overlook serious property violations and will not back up those trying to enforce our codes. He is the problem here in Dearborn, NOT the solution.

Gary has been a part of cleaning up the mess in the county, not part of the problem. Blaming Gary as commission chairman for Ficano's problems is like saying Tom as council president is responsible for the mistakes of the current mayor. You can't blame Gary without blaming the Tom.

Another thing... Gary became Chair of the Commission in January of 2011. Early in his term, Ficano's "issues" came to light. Anything that happened with the scandals happened BEFORE he became chair and isn't it interesting that it all came to light when Gary became Chair!!

Right,,,Gary became chair in 2011, but he's been there a lot longer than that. Gary is not to be blamed entirely and solely for what the commission has allowed Ficano to get away with, but he must share the blame with the rest of them, and more so since he became chairman. Are you trying to tell me that the commission has no responsibilities at all for the operation of Wayne County government?. And as for Tom, he has repeatedly voted against many of the O'Reilly sponsored issues in Dearborn, including the latest O'Reilly fiasco to buy a new city hall. It has only been recently since the Mullin issues that anyone on that commission has spoken out, and only then to sound as if they are truly concerned and are going to, from now on , be diligent. It's all a sideshow.

John"Remax"O'Reilly never saw a horrible real estate deal he didnt like. His real estate skills are as good as his lawyer skills, both always end up costing the tax payers millions.
O'Reilly propaganda minister Fred Hoffman said that "we are fortunate to have someone of his street smart and book smarts" REALLY?
Lets look at the "O'rielly Doctorine":
1.Cut or reduce city services or quality.
2.Approve pay raises for all cronies.
3.Run to tax payers and deceive them for more money.
O'Rielly is a politcal dinosaur, he is payphone in a world of wifi and ipads and gary woronchak isnt any better. The only place a fraud like gary could exist this long is in Wayne County which is one of the most corrupt counties in the country.
The only answer is Council President Tom Tafelski. He voted against many of the bad decisions the mayor made and is young enough to take dearborn in a new more modern direction that can rejuvenate this city.
I think Tafelski will flush the toilet in this city and down the drain will go all the left overs of current and previous administrations that have kept dearborn mired in red tape, cronyism and wasted money.
Lets hope next november we all hear that flushing sound.

yeah but tom supported the decision to buy the stupid golf course, how many thousands did that cost he could of supported the re-opening of the snow library so your children didnt have to travel across the busy roads and intersections to get to the bryant branch the library system can be run on a volunteer program like the museum is doing here now were saving more money people that the city have layed of and getting high rate unemployement can do this volunteer work in order toi get there check have no more pay raises in the city until we the people in the city approve of them that way our taxes will stay the same and what was wrong with the old city hall nothing just had to spend some of that federal money! why give the Henry ford 500,000.00 they were part of the project to begin with but our historical museum is in the neighborhood can't help fix it up or even give a budget and we offer it offer our children some history of the pioneer life to the modern day life through it school program can our children learn about our history as a town from a golf course i say no way! so yes i live very frugal and im not saying everyone has to live frugal but we as a city in whole have to help run the city let our officials know what we want attend all council meeting so that everything is addressed and we dont become address.why wait for a 22million dollar lawsuit just don't hired that company any more and remove the parking meters I have 60 of the 100 signitures needed and have 3 month

So far I haven't seen a candidate like that in Dearborn. Not a single one.

number one if i were to erect any kind of statue it would be of the ford family Clyde was the first mayor of this city. I would stay out of Detroit they have too many financial problems to even get involved so bell isle is out. I am in for the Dearborn cert team to take over police and fire services if it will be cheaper for the city but i definatly would not merge serves with melvindale cause whom would be paying the bill,i feel it would be us and us alone and not melvindale and why should our tax payers suffer anymore than they already have. and the city is not paying for anyone's hair cuts if you want your hair cut pay for it your self.. And the consolidation of the city of Fordson with the city of Dearborn was a good thing it made our city bigger and stronger as most of the people worked for ford motor it is the same as Dearborn merging with Springwell's township and greenfield township all no known as east Dearborn..

He's not against the Second Amendment. He, along with several other Mayors, sent a letter to the Governor asking him to vote against HB 5225 Permit-to-Purchase and Registration. Just because someone is against not letting everyone obtain a gun without a registration, or votes against allowing people to own guns that have no business in the hands of John Q. Citizen doesn't mean he's against the Second. Far as I'm concerned, just means he has a brain, Scarecrow.

Mr. Binkley. With all due respect. We have someone in DH who writes a blog and, too, ran for a council seat. I "believe" that one of the biggest reasons she didn't win is because when you read her blog, she also has run-on sentences, misspellings, incorrect word usage, etc. which gives the IMPRESSION that she's not very smart. So, too, with you. I also believe that if you want to run for a very important position, you need to make sure that anything you put out there is of the highest quality. People form impressions on what is written. You may very well be a good candidate. It's not proven by your writing.

And the first 6 months would be free of charge to the citizens to see if I am do a good job or not. If they say no then I would step down and let the council president have the job..
