Locally, the Southgate Coney on Eureka between Dix and Allen has the best. In Wayne County, I always switch between Lafayette and American downtown. Those two ARE the best... and A&W coneys are a tradition.

Lafayette, hands down. Just park close and don't use the restrooms.

Lafayette overall, with Leo's a close second if you're not driving downtown!

I agree with Bob Sadler. Lafayette's downtown (especially at 3 A.M.) with Leo's if you don't want the drive. Got to drink root beer with your coney.

American downtown! Otherwise we settle with Leo's or Senate in Dearborn.

Lafayette coney island is the best! No wait.... the American coney island is best! Oh what the heck I'll go out on a limb here, they both have the best coneys in Wayne County.

Locally, American. Nationally, A&W, as you always know what you are getting as far as taste, which I really enjoy.

All right, I love the downtown places and they ARE great coneys. But ... co-author Katherine Yung and I have been eating a lot of coneys in Wayne County and everywhere for Coney Detroit, a book coming out of Wayne State University in April. 160 photos, 10,000 words, a (partial ) map ... you get the idea. There are a LOT of great coney places in Wayne County. As much as we love Lafayette and American, we suggest you get out and visit more. I visited 13 Downriver coneys one day last month (Detroit Coney Island, River View, Riverside, Southside, City Hall, Wild Coney, Bizzy Bee, Zorba's, Parthenon, Downriver, Island Coney, Ramsey's, Tho's. Lots of good, unusual coneys. Some of the Wayne County places we visited for the book: American, Lafayette, George's Senate Coney Islands, The Coney Man, Duly's, SOME of the major chains: Leo's, Kerby's, National ... we could go on and on. There are 60 just along Gratiot, Woodward, Grand River and MIchigan Avenue. expand your coney horizons! You don't have to love just one! I'll update you on the book on the Coney Detroit facebook page. Go Patch! Go Coneys!

Joe, I knew you were a coney guru, but really? 13 in one day? Two questions: If you were going to pick just one to visit instead of Lafayette/American downtown, what would be your favorite? And what was the most unique?

Can't wait to read the book, Joe. (And 13 coneys in a day - wow!)

It's long gone now but this post wouldn't be complete without the mention of the old Genie's Wienies in Hamtramck...

Clare, Katherine Yung and I, as co-authors of Coney Detroit, are very careful to not play favorites. We do not want to abuse our power! I think I speak for both of us when I say we have enjoyed MANY coneys (and not enjoyed only a few.) Places where I have eaten lately that made me happy were the new Onassis across Michigan Avenue from the old Tiger Stadium, Island Coney on Grosse Ile and (today) What Up, Dawg? In East Lansing. About two weeks ago I did a side-by-side, having one each at Lafayette and American for lunch one day. No regrets.

I am into coney art right now and have like what I saw recently at the Greek Islands in Birmingham and West Bloomfield, as well as Downriver Coney Island. For the graphics (as long as we're talking about artwork) I liked Bizzy Bee. I was at six coneys yesterday (in part because it was the last day for Spanga's Royal Oak location. Sad). Tomorrow, I hope to carve out a few hours to visit some places in and around Utica. It's all for Coney Detroit love.
