Growing up as the only girl–and the youngest child–in my family, my motto was simple: I always get what I want.

To accomplish this goal, I became a master of the temper tantrum. On the kitchen floor, in the driveway, at the grocery store–it didn't matter. Until one day, at about age seven, my dad gave me a piece of advice that still sticks with me today.

He told me, calm as can be, "Jessica, you're smarter than that."

It wasn't just to distract me from whatever treat or toy I wanted. It was about instilling in me a sense of worth, confidence and pride. He was telling me that I can get what I want out of life by being smart, keeping my goals in mind, and working hard. Not by throwing fits.

We all know wisdom comes with age and life experiences, but it also comes from the advice our parents give us.

Growing up, dads do their best to guide us in the right direction.

Sometimes–like the wrestling matches my dad let my brother and I have–it's not the best guidance. Other times, they are the words and actions that make us who we are.

And 20 years later, I still get what I want. No temper tantrums necessary.
