UPDATE: ValuLand Opens This Weekend in Dearborn
The discount grocery store will open in the Newman Street strip.
A new grocery shopping option will be available for Dearborn residents this weekend.
Spartan Stores, the parent company for ValuLand, has made quick progress on their Dearborn store—set to open Sunday at 22541 Newman.
The store will officially open at 8 a.m. Sunday to shoppers. An official ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled the following day, Monday, Feb. 18, at 9 a.m. Community officials and store representatives will be present and the public is invited to attend.
Spartan Stores is a distributor that also operates several other store chains, as well as supplies to local grocers. ValuLand is the company's newest acquisition, with stores in Warren, Leslie, Roseville, Marion, Lansing and Clare.
ValuLand was originally set to open in October 2012.
The store will sell grocery items at a discounted price—including produce, meats and dry goods.
Dearborn Patch Facebook fans mostly said they were split on whether to give the store a try.
Debra Hay Ainsworth said she would give the Michigan-based ValuLand a try "right after I shop at ACO."
"Looking forward to checking out the new store!" added Vivian Shepard. "Welcome Valuland!!"
Patch fan Dawn Polk disagreed.
"Downtown Dearborn is turning into discount row, Goodwill, Valuland, and Dollar Family," she said. "When are the upscale stores coming?"
"As long as the discount stores are occupying storefronts, I don't really see a problem here," contested Abdallah Siblani. "Would you feel more comfortable passing by a strip mall of vacant buildings?"
Representatives of Spartan Stores say that the store has created 40 jobs in Dearborn.
“We are delighted to be part of the Dearborn community and to bring Valu Land to area shoppers," Spartan Stores Executive Vice President Merchandising and Marketing Alan Hartline said in a statement.
"The store caters primarily to budget-minded households by offering value-priced items, as well as convenience, freshness and quality," he added. "With the economy as it is, Valu Land is responding to a heightened need for value that shoppers can depend on every day. Convenience is a key factor in terms of finding quality staple items at low prices in an organized supermarket which saves time searching for deals and navigating the store.”
