Ohio Man Arrested in Dearborn For Lottery Ticket Thefts

Eric Joseph Demarte is suspected of stealing tickets from locations in Dearborn and other cities.

An Ohio man was arrested Sunday in Dearborn for stealing lottery tickets, Dearborn police confirmed Thursday.

Eric Joseph Demarte has been charged with larceny from a building and several retail fraud charges for thefts of lottery tickets from Dearborn Liquor and a local Sunoco gas station.

Dearborn police also say they expect the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office to approve charges against Demarte for attempted thefts from a Dearborn 7-Eleven and Joseph's Market.

Demarte is also suspected in multiple lottery ticket thefts in other cities—including Allen Park, Southgate, Westland and Redford—according to Dearborn police.

Demarte was arraigned in front of Judge William Hultgren in the 19th District Court this week, and bond was set at $50,000.

He is expected to appear before Judge Mark Somers at 9 a.m. on Jan. 18 for a preliminary exam.

"Our detectives put a significant amount of time into this investigation, and it paid off—unlike Mr. Demarte's ill-gotten lottery tickets," Dearborn Chief of Police Ronald Haddad said in a statement.

He took a gamble and it didn`t pay off! Seriously, this man has a disease and needs help from his gambling addiction.

A thief does not need help from a "gambling addiction", he needs hard jailtime. It is not our obligation to cure a thief from an "addiction" . Enough is enough of never blaming a criminal for their own behavior.
