They’re young. They’re inexperienced.

None of that seemed to matter as Divine Child captured the softball City Tournament Championship with an 11-5 victory over host, Edsel Ford High, in the title game Saturday afternoon.

“I think, finally, we’re starting to come together,” DC coach Tedi Belisle said. “We’re just really young and we were making a lot of mental errors. It seems like we’re starting to eliminate those errors now. When we do that, we’re a pretty good team.”

The softball and baseball tournaments pitted teams from all four Dearborn schools against each other. In the girls' semifinal ballgames, DC went up against Dearborn High, while Edsel played Fordson. Divine Child also took the win for baseball.

DC looked particularly sharp in both games Saturday, ousting Dearborn High, 8-2, in the tournament opener earlier in the day before capturing the crown over the Thunderbirds in the title game.

Solid performances were all around for the Lady Falcons, according to the coach.

“You really can’t single out one or two players,” Belisle said. “Everyone played really well today.”

Aside from being able to bring the trophy back to DC, the victory also goes a long way in building the teams confidence, Belisle says.

“We came in wanting to win, expecting to win, sure,” Belisle said. “And there’s a difference between winning a game by one run and winning by six or seven runs. We needed to come in here and win games like we did. It really does a lot to help instill confidence. We need to get our swagger back.”

Edsel kept the game close though the first three-plus innings, then the Lady Falcons exploded for six runs in the fourth inning, breaking the game open and blazing a trail to the title.

DC jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning and thwarting a potential Lady Thunderbirds threat in the opening frame with a rare triple play.

A determined Edsel squad battled back, however, closing the gap to 5-4 before the Lady Falcons fourth-inning eruption.

“We just made too many mental mistakes today,” Edsel manager Mike Moyer said. “I know our team is better than we played today. I mean, we played well, but I know we can be better than what we showed today.”

Edsel earned a trip to the championship game thanks to a 16-2 victory over Fordson earlier Saturday afternoon.
