Dearborn's DuVall Elementary School went to great lengths on Wednesday to help people battling cancer. Specifically, eight inches or more.

Multiple students–as well as several community members, parents, and one teacher–agreed to cut off their hair to be donated to create wigs for women going through cancer treatment.

The effort–part of the Pantene charity Beautiful Lengths–was coordinated through the school's Do-Vall Club, which focuses on organizing community service efforts that help the school and greater community.

"We've always wanted to do a community service club," explained Michael Hawkins, a substitute teacher at DuVall, who oversees the club with third grade teacher Anne Rosenau.

Started just in the 2011-12 school year, the Do-Vall Club has accomplished a lot in its short tenure: collecting cell phones for soldiers and toiletries for shelters, making blankets for the Dearborn Animal Shelter, and coordinating the addition of a composter to their lunchroom.

"This is our big event to close out the year," Rosenau said of the hair donation.

Though no students in the Do-Vall Club had hair long enough to donate, they were able to rustle up 11 willing donors–including five students, one sibling, one parent, one teacher, one anonymous donor, and Hawkins' 3-year-old neice.

"For us to do this, I think it's a really cool and courageous thing," said Rosenau. "We have five (student) volunteers, so I hope next year, we'll have even more."

The girls and women involved said the decision to donate was an easy one.

"I wanted to feel good about myself and let other people be happy," said fourth grader Lena Alkadry, who admitted she was "really shocked" by her new short hair.

"I feel bad for eveybody who has cancer," added fourth grader Alyssa Berry, "and I wanted to help."

Of her new haircut, Berry admitted with a smile, "I think it's a good look for me."

Haircuts were provided by Liz Faszcsa, owner of the Hair Palladian in Allen Park. Donors included students Lexie Helka, Nora Linda Musaibli, Alyssa Berry, Diana Nieto, Lena Alkadry, Kaari Peecher; sibling Brisa Nieto; Madelyn Hawkins; teacher Lori Courtright; parent Mrs. Wagner; and one anonymous donor.
