As the Dearborn Animal Shelter attempts to hit its three-month goal of 300 extra adoptions by the end of October, they're inviting local "celebrities" to help draw in new possible adoptive families.

From 3-7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, guest "Pet-Tenders" will volunteer an hour of their time to feature adoptable animals at the shelter. They invite their circle of friends to come during that hour in hopes that someone they may know might want to adopt a new furry best friend.

Patch Editor Jessica Carreras will be among those volunteering their time. Come say hi to Patch and meet some adoptable animals between 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24.

Volunteers can include business leaders, city officials, or just regular residents looking to help out.

The push is part of the shelter's involvement with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' Rachael Ray $100K Challenge, and the Dearborn Animal Shelter is in the running to win thousands of dollars.

The challenge runs through the end of October, and a competition that inspires shelters and their communities to come up with innovative ways to save at least 300 more dogs and cats within a three-month period than were saved during the same three months the year before.

For the Dearborn Animal Shelter, that has meant finding homes for more than 700 animals from August through October, which is nearly double last year's adoptions.
