Detroit Man Arrested for Catalytic Converter Thefts

Dearborn police believe they may have nabbed a man responsible for more than 100 car part thefts.

on Thursday arrested a man they believe is responsible for nearly 100 thefts of car parts in the city and surrounding areas.

Detroit resident Karondi Nasseer Hernton was arraigned Friday at the on two counts of larceny from a vehicle.

Police nabbed Hernton thanks to a tip from a Dearborn resident.

After receiving the tip, police began surveillance of a man driving a 2001 tan Lincoln Town Car in a parking lot near Michigan and Schlaff. The man, later identified as Hernton, was observed removing two catalytic converters from cars in the parking lot, after which police followed him to Madison Heights, where they arrested him while he allegedly tried to steal another catalytic converter.

Dozens of thefts of that particular car part have been reported in Dearborn throughout the past two months, including in the same area of Dearborn Hernton was observed at on Thursday.

Dearborn Chief of Police Ronald Haddad said he believes Hernton is the prime suspect in many of the recent crimes in Dearborn and surrounding areas.

He thanked the public for their help in locating and arresting Hernton.

"This arrest is a prime example of what the Dearborn community can accomplish when residents cooperate with the police by providing tips of suspicious behavior," Haddad said in a statement.
