Dearborn Schools to Offer Discount Card for Seniors

Program will give free admission to school events and discounts on various items.

Dearborn senior citizens will be getting a special showing of love this Valentine’s Day from the Dearborn Public Schools.

On Feb. 14, residents of the school district over the age of 60 can stop by any of the district’s school or administration buildings and pick up the new Premier Citizen Discount Card. The card offers senior citizens free admission to most school events, plus discounts on merchandise, food, and educational classes.

The new program builds upon the Golden Ager card, which was started 20 years ago with the same goal in mind of getting seniors involved in school events and spirit.

“We are proud that many residents in the over 60 crowd are alumni,” said Supt. Brian Whiston, “and we welcome them back to enjoy the events and activities that occur in our schools.”

The launch of the new Premier Citizen Discount Card at all schools on Valentine’s Day will be made even sweeter: free cookies will be given to anyone stopping by a school to pick up the card that day. Also, the first person to stop by any school on Feb. 14 to pick up their card will also receive a Target gift card.

The card is free to obtain with proof of senior citizenship and residency within the Dearborn Public Schools district. It includes:

  • Free admission to all school-sponsored activities, including concerts and athletic events, but excluding plays due to fees charged to schools for licensing of performance rights
  • Discounts on select Community Education classes
  • A 10 percent discount on merchandise sold at school stores. (limit four items per year)
  • Participation in school lunch programs at reduced prices. Reduced price is a 10 percent discount on the total purchase, but users must contact the school in advance to participate

“Our students have plenty to offer and community members will be proud of the accomplishments of the young people in their neighborhood,” Whiston added. “We hope that everyone over the age of 60 will pick up a Premier Citizen Discount Card and take advantage of the free admission and discounts.”
