Dearborn School Board Commends Students Who Collected Money, Toys For Kids
Fordson High School teens raised $4,500 and collected donations for Toys for Tots in December.
Fordson High School students involved in student government were commended this month by the Dearborn Board of Education for raising thousands of dollars, plus donations of toys, in their holiday Toys for Tots drive at the end of 2012.
Ali Farhat, a senior at Fordson, showcased the check for nearly $5,000—which the students donated to the Children's Hospital of Michigan—at the Jan. 14 board meeting. He spoke of the hard work he and other students put in to raise the funds and donations from fellow students, parents and staff.
"To see the smiles on children's faces," he said, "it was worth it."
Board Trustee Hussein Berry commented that the amount of donations was astounding.
"High schools—they usually bring in $50-$60 and 10-15 toys," he said of Toys for Tots drives. "(The students at Fordson) did an amazing job."
