Dearborn’s Woronchak Blasts Airport Hiring Process

Controversy continues to swirl around Turika Mullin, a former Wayne County employee who was hired as the CEO for the Wayne County Airport Authority.

Gary Woronchak, the Wayne County Commission Chairman and a Democrat from Dearborn, said he has concerns about a controversial hire by county government.

"It's clear there are some cozy relationships between the airport authority and the county government," Woronchak said in an article in the Detroit News.

Woronchak and others are upset about the hiring of former Wayne County economic development director Turika Mullin as the Wayne County Airport Authority CEO even though Mullin had no previous experience.

The resulting controversy has led to suspensions, firings, a FBI investigation and a lot of heat directed at Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano, who was Mullin’s former boss.

Detroit Free Press columnist Rocehlle Riley blasted Ficano, calling for him to stop playing “Whack-A-Mole” and fix the mess.

What do you think about the situation? Should Ficano take responsiblity?

A bit disingenuous on Woronchak's part...he's been on the commission for years. We are currently in a ballot fight over this in Dearborn...the people who want the commission claim they have oversight to prevent this type of cronyism from happening...but clearly, in Wayne County, the same commission either doesn't have the authority or they look the other way or they're not savvy enough to ferret out the truth. Bad all the way around.

This whole thing is borderline criminal. problem is they are all so intertwined that it will be nearly impossible to get through to the actual truth. 5 to 1 match on retirement contributions? Are you kidding me? These are tax dollars not Ficanos dollars that are being handed out! There don't seem to be any checks and balances on these people.

It's not just county government with sweetheart deals. Canton Twp is paying it's past supervisor 85% of his $126,000/yr salary when he left office a couple of years ago. How's that sit with you retiree's?
