12th Congressional District: Karen Jacobsen
Karen Jacobsen will face off in the Republican primary against Cynthia Kallgren of Trenton for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
This is the second of a four part series introducing the candidates running for the 12th Congressional seat.
Karen Jacobsen can remember a time several years back when, as she puts it, “I was not all that politically aware.”
But, like many Americans, she was spurred to interest and eventually to action in 2009, when President Barack Obama’s health care reform bill passed into law.
“I never thought in my wildest dreams that (Congress) would pass that bill,” said Jacobsen. “At that point, I had an epiphany: These people don’t work for us anymore.”
Fast-forward to this year, and Jacobsen–a 22-year resident of Dearborn and the co-owner of die-cut company Jacobsen Industries with husband Lee–has thrown her hat in the ring for the Republican nomination in the U.S. House of Representatives race for Michigan’s 12th District.
The newly drawn 12th District encompasses much of southeastern Wayne County, as well as parts of Washtenaw County, including Trenton, Wyandotte, Dearborn, Taylor, Bellville, Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor, among others.
Jacobsen faces fellow Republican Cynthia Kallgren in the Aug. 7 primaries. But the district’s biggest contender is incumbent John Dingell, who has represented the area for more than 50 years.
A critic of Dingell’s decisions in Congress, Jacobsen said she originally planned to support any candidate running against the long-time Dearborn Democratic lawmaker.
“But where was that candidate?” she asked, which is what spurred her to run.
Of Dingell, Jacobsen said his reputation is great, but his voting record is hurtful to the very area he represents.
“He’s done a lot of local things and ceremonial things,” Jacobsen said. “But the things he’s done in Washington … he’s voting to ruin our country.”
Jacobsen’s top issues of concern are health care, social security, regulations, and national debt. She calls social security her “No. 1 issue against John Dingell.”
“If I were the people of this district, I’d be mad,” she said. “But they don’t know what he’s done.”
And she believes there’s very little time left to reverse the damage that’s been done.
But while the future may include difficult choices in Washington, Jacobsen believes her background in business will help bring the voice of the people to those decisions.
“I’m always going to be a business person,” she said. “I say it the way it is and I don’t stop to do political calculations. I don’t care about politics. I care about fixing the big problems in this country before we go over the edge.”
The grand opening of Jacobsen’s Dearborn office, located at 24148 Michigan Ave., will take place Tuesday, June 26, at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend. Or, visit www.karenj2012.com for more information.

Sounds good to me. I just checked out her website. I appreciate her emphasis on fiscal responsibility and oversight on regulations. I'll stop by her event tonight and watch out for her name in the upcoming months.

Readers - do you think defeating John Dingell will be a long shot, or is his time up?

You didn't get mad when the Supreme Court stopped a legal recount and appointed a President.
You didn't get mad when Cheney allowed Energy company officials to dictate energy policy.
You didn't get mad when a covert CIA operative got outed.
You didn't get mad when the Patriot Act got passed.
You didn't get mad when we illegally invaded a country that posed no threat to us.
You didn't get mad when we spent over 600 billion(and counting) on said illegal war.
You didn't get mad when over 10 billion dollars just disappeared in Iraq.
You didn't get mad when you found out we were torturing people.
You didn't get mad when the government was illegally wiretapping Americans.
You didn't get mad when we didn't catch Bin Laden.
You didn't get mad when you saw the horrible conditions at Walter Reed.
You didn't get mad when we let a major US city, New Orleans, drown.
You didn't get mad when we gave a 900 billion tax break to the rich.
You didn't get mad when the deficit hit the trillion dollar mark.
You finally got mad when the government decided that people in America deserved the right to see a doctor if they are sick. Yes, illegal wars, lies, corruption, torture, stealing your tax dollars to make the rich richer, are all okay with you, but helping other Americans...oh hell no.

Funny, all your objections are items that Obama has also championed but I'll wager you'll vote for him in November! Bush was a liberal that only ran as a Republican because of is insane bible views.

Wow - Boileroperator - Right on!
I just learned of a young man in our neighborhood who has terminal cancer. He knew something was wrong but was afraid to seek medical advice because he had no insurance. That is crazy. In our affluent society, that such a situation should exist.

Boileropp,
Besides your MSNBC taliking points being wrong, what does what George Bush did in 2002 and 2002 have to do with this woman wanting to run for congress?

Moe, please tell me your Faux news talking points.
"If I were the people of this district, I’d be mad,” she said. “But they don’t know what he’s done.”
What he did is help Americans see a doctor when they are sick.

No talking points. Just wondering why you would use 10 year old charges against George Bush (many wrong) to bash this woman. If you feel John Dingell has done a wonderful job and think he still is capable go a head and vote for him. If you think Dingell knows what was in the Health care bill which he and most others didn't read before voting for it, then go a head and vote for him.
He has been part of the problem for many years and I'm looking for new faces and new ideas.

I wasn't bashing her. She pointed out what made her mad. I pointed out the irony of what makes republicans mad.
