Dearborn Man Arrested for Heights Hit and Run

The man was also charged with an OWI offense in Dearborn.

A Dearborn man is in custody for a hit-and-run accident that occurred in Dearborn Heights Wednesday.

According to WDIV, 24-year-old Steven Damian was hit by a truck while walking on Telegraph Road by Van Born Street around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

A witness described the offending vehicle as a blue 2012 Ford F-150 with damage to its passenger side, including a missing mirror.

Dearborn police responded to a call from someone who said they saw a vehicle matching that description just after noon on Wednesday, according to police reports. Officers stopped the driver in the parking lot of Mike's Party Store as he was attempting to leave.

The man was asked to exit the vehicle and Dearborn Heights police responded to the scene. Officers from that department confirmed that it matched the vehicle description from the hit and run earlier that day.

Meanwhile, the man—a Dearborn resident—was put through field sobriety tests, which he failed. A breathalyzer test revealed his blood-alcohol content to be .22—nearly three times the legal limit.

The man was charged with Operating While Intoxicated—his second offense, according to police reports.

The vehicle was released to Dearborn Heights police for testing. Charges from Heights police for the hit-and-run are currently pending.

Damian, a resident of Dearborn Heights is still in critical condition at Oakwood Hospital, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Glad they found the bad guy, and interesting that he was drunk , really drunk.

With today's technology, there must be a simple way to keep drunks from driving without adding to the cost of the rest of us. Perhaps if you get convicted with a DWI over the legal limit, for the rest of your driving career you are required to purchase a alcohol breath detector or something similar in order to get a driver's license. I know it is an illness, etc etc, but like other illnesses, steps must be taken to prevent consequences to the rest of the population, in this case, hit and run.
Get one that covers smoking weed as well. Something that can't be defeated by a 'so called' friend.

Here is a possible device http://www.stopdwi.com/

I totally agree Lee Jacobsen! Absolutely. first offenses should be obligated to get this, have car impounded until this device is permanently installed. No installation? No car! Car gets auctioned within 6 months. Illness or not.... it's like allowing the mentally ill to operate killing machines. ... Hit and run? Critical condition? He's obviously a remorseless self loathing repeat offender that needs help. Sorry to be so severe but there are entirely way too many drunk drivers on the road harming innocent people. Make them ride bikes.

Generally, in Michigan, a breathalyzer is required to be installed on one's car after a second offense - and that's after they've "earned" their license back. Also, the machine requires that the driver blow into it repeatedly throughout their trip, so it's hard to "cheat."

I don't know if there's any legislation currently pending in Michigan that drives for harsher consequences for a first offense.
