With today's technology, there must be a simple way to keep drunks from driving without adding to the cost of the rest of us. Perhaps if you get convicted with a DWI over the legal limit, for the rest of your driving career you are required to purchase a alcohol breath detector or something similar in order to get a driver's license. I know it is an illness, etc etc, but like other illnesses, steps must be taken to prevent consequences to the rest of the population, in this case, hit and run.
Get one that covers smoking weed as well. Something that can't be defeated by a 'so called' friend.

I totally agree Lee Jacobsen! Absolutely. first offenses should be obligated to get this, have car impounded until this device is permanently installed. No installation? No car! Car gets auctioned within 6 months. Illness or not.... it's like allowing the mentally ill to operate killing machines. ... Hit and run? Critical condition? He's obviously a remorseless self loathing repeat offender that needs help. Sorry to be so severe but there are entirely way too many drunk drivers on the road harming innocent people. Make them ride bikes.

Generally, in Michigan, a breathalyzer is required to be installed on one's car after a second offense - and that's after they've "earned" their license back. Also, the machine requires that the driver blow into it repeatedly throughout their trip, so it's hard to "cheat."

I don't know if there's any legislation currently pending in Michigan that drives for harsher consequences for a first offense.
