Dearborn, Fordson Rank Among Best High Schools in Michigan
DHS was ranked 50th in the state, while Fordson was ranked 55th. Edsel Ford did not rank.
Two Dearborn high schools made the cut as the "Best High Schools in Michigan," according to rankings released this week by U.S. News & World Report.
The publication evaluated nearly 22,000 public high schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia. Schools were awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals based on state proficiency standards, how well they prepare students for college, and other factors.
A total of 826 Michigan high schools were evaluated. Six received gold medals, with another 49 receiving silver medals and 149 receiving bronze medals. Only the 55 gold and silver medalists received official state and national rankings.
Dearborn High School was ranked 50th in the state (1,848th in the country), and was awarded a silver medal.
Fordson High School was also awarded a silver medal, with a ranking of 55th in the state (2,007th in the country).
Edsel Ford High School did not rank, but was given a bronze medal for above-average proficiency standards.
The schools ranked relatively low on college-readiness, based on the U.S. News & World Report's standards, which are based on the percentage of students who pass AP exams. Dearborn, Fordson and Edsel ranked 18.2, 16.3 and 15.2, respectively.

This is not a fair assessment. I looked on the list and two schools I looked up were not ranked for whatever reason. Even though they are known to be in the top school categories in Michigan: Farmington Hills, Northville.

There are a couple articles describing their ranking process - this is a good one: http://www.usnews.com/education/high-schools/articles/2012/05/07/best-high-schools-methodology
They weigh heavily on schools' disadvantaged students, which could account for some skewing of numbers. So while Dearborn or Fordson might not be better overall, they're doing quite well given the high number of ESL and economically disadvantaged students.
Other readers - what do you think? Is this report accurate?

I came to Fordson with my ears filled with horror stories four years ago. I should say, Urban Myths. I have seen a lot of positive changes in the last four years. I am pretty sure the students population is over 2,100 students - - remove 200 problem students thats about 10% and Fordson would be problem free. Its an honor to attend a school that has ranked 55 in the state and 2007 in the country.

Youseff Mousallem, as principal of Fordson, has done an outstanding job of turning that school around in so many more ways than just scholastic measurement. Imad Fadlallah, the previous principal, had made that place a misery. I won't go into all that he did to tear that high school down to a shadow of it's former self...just suffice it to say that Youseff has done a saviors job in doing what many thought wasn't possible.
